Bathing a Newborn Baby - Where Is Best?

Firstly, babies don't need to bathe that often as they don't really get dirty. But of course they do need to bathe.

1. Baby bath tub
You can buy a baby bath tub for your newborn and as the baby gets bigger, you can start bathing them in the adult bath. The advantages of a baby bath are that you can sit on the floor and bathe your baby so you're not bending. This will help spare your back. The other advantage is that you can bathe your baby in the bedroom or living room in case your bathroom is cold. The only disadvantage is that babies outgrow these quickly so it may feel like a bit of a waste of money. But you can always sell it at a baby auction site which is great for the sale of secondhand baby stuff.

2. Baby bucket bath
This is quite a new type of bath for a baby. They're bucket shaped and your baby sits in the bucket with water up to their shoulders. An example of this type of bath is the tummy tub. It allows the baby to sit in the fetal position which is believed to be the most comfortable position for the baby. The advantage of this type of bath is that both your hands are free to wash your baby. They're also smaller so take up less space and use less water. The disadvantage is that these are normally designed for use up to 6 months so again may seem like an unnecessary expense. Also they are not very spacious so don't have any room for bath toys.

3. Bath seats and supports
Bath seats are aimed at older babies, usually 4 months plus. Bath supports are for newborns. Bath supports can be used in adult tubs and baby bath tubs. They look like basic reclining seats and make it easier for you to wash your baby. They're not heavy so they're good for travel.

4. The bathroom sink (the old-fashioned way!)
Newborn babies can be bathed in the sink. The advantages of this are that you don't have to buy a bath or support or anything. But the main disadvantage is that you have to be very careful not to knock the baby against the taps or the rims of the sink. Also, if you're washing under running water, there is a danger that the water may get too hot or too cold.

Finally the most important safety tip: don't ever leave your baby unattended in the bath.
