Within the first few weeks that your baby is born you will not need to bathe your baby. Instead, you will wash your baby down with a wash clothe. Your baby should not get a bath until the umbilical cord comes off, which can be a few weeks after birth. After the umbilical cord falls of you can put your baby in the bath.
You may want to begin with a bath that has the sling to put your baby in. this will give your child the most support. Be sure that you always test the temperature and have everything that you will need for bath time before you put your baby in the tub. The water should be lukewarm.
One of the most important tips to remember is to be sure to have all bathing supplies ready within arms reach of the bath before you put your baby in. This includes a towel, washcloth, body wash, shampoo and a cup to rinse hair. Have everything prepared. You may want to have put everything in a small basket that way it's all organized and easily accessible. If there is ever a time you forget to bring something and your baby is already in the tub either yell to your partner to get it or take the baby with you to get it. The most important tip to remember during bath time is never ever leaving your baby unattended.
Once your baby has better control of his or her neck, usually about 3 or 4 months, you can take the sling out and use the bath regularly. The baby will be able to sit or lay on an angle in the bath tub. You can introduce all sorts fo fun gifts like the rubber duckies that squirt the water or the glowing floaters. There are all sorts of waterproof books that baby can read and look at while you are bathing them so they are distracted and let you get into all the nooks without squirming too much. It's often hard to wash the baby's hair. Some of the buckets with the rubber front are helpful, but in order to get baby to look up you should have a fun baby gift in your hand holding it high above so they will loook up.
Once your baby starts to fully sit up you can put him or her in a regular bath tub. I would recommend that you buy one of the blowup bathtubs to put inside for padding until you and your baby get used to and feel comfortable using a regular bath. You can buy the baby gifts and fun newborn toys to play with during bath time. This will make bath time more pleasurable for you and your baby.
No matter what kind of bath you are using, always be sure that you support your baby and are right there in case an accident does happen. Most the time your reaction will be quick enough to prevent any injury. Remember to never leave your baby unattended at any time.
Once you are finished bathing your baby. Wrap your baby tightly in a towel and dry him or her off. You want to keep your child covered as you dry him or her. That way your baby will not get a chill. Continue to massage lotion on your baby one section of the body at a time. Then diaper and dress your baby. And you are all done.
