The first on your giving your baby a bath can be a bit stressful. To make sure that everything goes smoothly and safely, make sure that you can take your time that you have no other tasks that might distract you.
First of all, get your tub and make sure that you place it in the sink or you own bathtub in such a way that it doesn't wobble and certainly won't tip. Otherwise might scare the baby or worse.
Next you'll need to gather all the things you will need to wash the infant: a washcloth and soap, baby shampoo. Also use a cup to rinse the baby's hair, avoid the temptation to use the shower head for this as it is difficult to measure the water temperature when you do. Place everything within reach of your dominant hand and already loosen the caps of the bottles so that you don't get enervated with the baby present.
Babies have a sensitive skin, so only use lukewarm water. Test the temperature with the inside of your wrist as our own skin is also most sensitive there. Also don't fill the tub completely, the baby shouldn't be fully submerged but you do need sufficient water to keep the infant warm and rinse off the soap. Let the faucet run until it feels cold, that way you avoid the baby getting burned should it grab for the faucet or if hot drips should fall onto the child.
Next you will have the baby into the tub. Go gently about this and should the child look frightened, move it closer to the edge. The baby should experience bath time as something fun so sing and talk to her, play with her hands and feet.
Start by washing the facial area (neck, cheeks, behind the ears) first, then move down to the body and back and then go to the legs. You'll want to keep the bottom till last as you don't want to clean the child with a dirty washcloth.
When you wash her hairs, don't use anything else than baby shampoo as regular shampoo will be too irritating. Rinse the head slowly carefully with lukewarm or cooler water.
Once she's all clean again, you can dry her off and put on a fresh diaper and clothes. You can now comb her hair and if necessary clip her nails with baby clippers. Should the baby have dry skin, you can use a lotion to moisturize it.
